What is Otsukimi?
Otsukimi (お月見), meaning “moon viewing,” is a traditional Japanese festival dedicated to admiring the beauty of the full moon. The Otsukimi is a time to appreciate the autumn moon at its brightest and fullest. During the festival, people gather to enjoy the moonlight, decorate their homes with pampas grass, and eat special foods like tsukimi dango (rice dumplings).
The festival has roots in ancient agricultural practices, where the moon’s light was crucial for harvesting crops, and it remains a cherished cultural event in Japan.
Around the World
The tradition of moon viewing and celebrating the full moon is not unique to Japan. In China, the Mid-Autumn Festival, or Zhōngqiū Jié, is a major holiday celebrated with family reunions, mooncakes, and lantern displays. Korea’s Chuseok is a significant harvest festival where families honor their ancestors and share traditional foods. Vietnam celebrates Tết Trung Thu, also known as the “Children’s Festival,” with lantern parades, lion dances, and mooncakes. In Taiwan, the Mid-Autumn Festival involves family gatherings, mooncakes, and barbecues. We will celebrate all these cultures with performers, booths, food, and activities reflecting these diverse traditions, creating a rich, multicultural experience for everyone to enjoy.
